  A WEEK-IN-REVIEW FEATURED REPORT
Research Initiative, Treatment Action (RITA)  Winter 2015
This issue of Research Initiative, Treatment Action (RITA) focuses on high blood glucose and diabetes in
people with HIV infection. In an interview HIV diabetes expert Todd Brown of Johns Hopkins discusses HIV
and its manifestations as diabetes risk factors, the impact of newer antiretrovirals on diabetes risk, and
use of the hemoglobin A1c test to screen for and monitor high blood sugar. Three comprehensive review
articles summarize the latest research on (1) diabetes incidence and prevalence in people with HIV,
(2) diabetes screening fundamentals and standards of care in HIV populations, and (3) the manifold classic
and HIV-specific risk factors for diabetes. A 1-page patient guide lists fundamentals on diabetes symptoms,
risk, prevention, and control
.
