The Alabama Department of Corrections has agreed to make dozens of improvements in the care and treatment
of HIV positive inmates in order to settle a federal lawsuit. Officials also agreed to submit the HIV unit at
Limestone to two years of monitoring by a medical consultant who will make quarterly visits to ensure that prisoners receive a community standard of care.

The agreement results from a 2002 lawsuit that led to investigations revealing substandard housing and
conditions that caused 38 premature deaths, according to several reports. Even though conditions have improved
since the filing of the lawsuit, the settlement puts in writing some of the improvements the department has
undertaken.
