Charles Kelley moved to
Nashville in mid-2005 to pursue a musical career after his pop singer
brother Josh bought a house there and convinced Charles to come live with
him so they could write songs together. But Charles had to move out when
Josh became engaged to actress Katherine Heigl. Charles subsequently married
long-time girl friend Cassie McConnell on the 2009 Fourth of July weekend in
the Bahamas. Cassie allegedly agreed to be married after Josh tattooed "All
your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise," from the Beatles
song, "Blackbird", on his right forearm.
Charles cofounded the country rock band Lady Antebellum in 2006 along
with Dave Haywood whom Charles met at age of 14 when they wrote their first
song, and Hillary Scott, a two-time reject from TV's American Idol.. On the
BBC Radio 2 Drivetime Show August 9, 2010, the trio explained that the name
Antebellum came while photographing tpre-civil war antebellum homes. One of the group said that
there's a great band name and they adopted the Lady Antebellum
name shortly afterwards.
The band's self titled debut album was released in April 2008.with ten of
the eleven songs on the album written or co-written by the trio. Their
second studio album, Need You Now, was released in 2010. The
title song was their debut single in the UK and Europe which was highly
unusual for a US country band, and won four Grammy Awards in 2011
including for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, and was the first
country song to win both honors since 2007, and only the second ever.
To celebrate Charles' birthday, we had originally planned on toasting
him with bacon-infused whiskey which Charles apparently enjoyed at
Nashville's Patterson House in 2011 which serves Prohibition-era drinks when
the trio was toasting the upcoming album Own the Night, but the taste
of the Southern staple of bacon and whisky made us a littlie queasy . So
instead we suggest making another Southern specialty, Antebellum Rice Bread,
while enjoying the video of "Need You
Now" (free of charge) on
MTV.com.
