What was seen as a fairy tale wedding and a romantic storybook marriage generated new public interest in the monarchy. The royal couple had two children, Prince William and Prince Henry (Harry).

Despite their glittering public image, however, the Prince and Princess of Wales separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996, amid lurid press reports about adultery on both sides. Charles' relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles became so unpopular that at one point Camilla was pelted with rolls by fellow shoppers at a supermarket.

Camilla Parker-Bowles was once considered to be one of the most hated women in the world when it was reported in the press that she and Prince Charles were having an affair and causing the rift and subsequent divorce between Charles and Princess Diana in 1996.  Charles' affair with Camilla became so unpopular that she was pelted with rolls by shoppers at a supermarket.

Camilla's and Charles' relationship allegedly began at a polo match in 1970 when it was reported that the first words that Camilla said to Charles when they met were,  “My great-grandmother and your great-grandfather were lovers. How about it?”  Their affair tapered off the following year when Charles decided that he wanted to complete his navel service before considering marriage.  After Charles joined the Royal Navy, Camilla married cavalry officer Andrew Parker Bowles. A few years after Charles married Diana, he resumed his affair with Camilla.

In 1985, rumors were reported in the British press of problems in the royal marriage. Diana eventually gave a BBC interview in which she blamed Camilla, whom she privately referred to as "the Rottweiler", as the reason for the break up of her own marriage, saying: "Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded"  Charles subsequently admitted the adultery in another BBC interview, after which the Parker Bowleses announced their divorce in 1995.

After Diana' s death in August 1997, Camilla retreated from the public eye. After a few years, Camilla and Charles began to appear at official events together. In February 10, 2005, it was announced that Camilla and Charles were engaged and they were subsequently married on April 9, 2005 when Camilla officially became the Duchess or Cornwall.

Many of the Brits eventually warmed up to Camilla who offers hope to middle-aged women everywhere that, like Snow White, some day their prince will come. So with Diana's epithet for Camilla in mind, let's toast Camilla on her birthday with the Rottweiler while watching her played by Jane How in the TV film Charles and Diana: Unhappily Ever After (1992).
